Soft skills: Leading employees
Coaching
How do your managers react when employees come to them with questions, problems and concerns?
Many managers tend to answer questions quickly, solve the problem or take on the entire task themselves. Sometimes this can be the right thing to do. However, this mainly teaches employees to keep turning to their manager. And they don't learn how to deal with issues on their own.
Helping people help themselves
Managers should not only strive to solve problems, but should see such situations as a development opportunity for their team members. They should do not give more help than is necessaryso that employees can Overcoming challenges independently can.
In this way, they strengthen the competence and self-confidence of their team members. In the best case scenario, they will no longer need the support of their manager in a similar situation.
When is coaching appropriate?
Coaching is the form of support in which the manager least of all proposes his own solutions, but primarily helps employees to find individual solution options. This conversation format is of course not useful if there are clear, proven and desired procedures that the employee just doesn't know yet. In that case, the manager should teach them to him.
But this is often not the case: for example, in conflicts with customers or employees, critical situations in projects, personal questions and decisions about one's own career path - there is no one right answer.
The manager as coach
The first challenge is to consciously deal with the two roles of manager and coach. Then it is a learning process for most managers to trust in the problem-solving skills of their employees. After all, they have to know how to conduct a professional coaching conversation and practice this.
